There have been different eyewitness accounts from the deadly accident that occurred a few hours ago at Akomadan. Passengers who were on the bus when it caught fire are still troubled and do not know how it all started and ended.
A lady has provided a very detailed account of the accident and how she was able to save herself and her son. She also bordered the bus from the Upper West Region and was heading towards Kumasi. She was traveling with her son who is very young and as such, he was with her all along.
According to her account, the driver was very reckless whilst on the road to the extent that they escaped an initial accident. When they got to one of the communities along the busy road, the driver could not notice the presence of some animals who were using the road and nearly knocked them down. In the process, the vehicle almost had an accident.
After they escape that encounter, they asked the driver to stop speeding but he did not listen. Here, the lady started holding her baby tight. When they got to the point of the accident, the driver could not control his brakes again. The lady was sitting close to the front seat where the fire started. Her only wish was to save her baby and as a result, she initially tried to use the main door of the vehicle but the fire was very massive there.
She looked back in the windows and some passengers had already broken them. She realized it was her last chance to save her baby. She then threw her baby out from the window and did not bother where he was landing. The next was to save her life, here too, she managed to use the window and escape the fire. Fortunately for her, she came out to meet her son very healthy with minor injuries. She also developed minor injuries as a result. She is grateful to God for her life and that of her child, however, she is pained for the death of the other passengers. She believes that they could have been saved if the security officers who came to the scene were able to break the windows.
The accounts by most passengers in the vehicle suggest that the driver was overspending. They warned him of the dangers but he did not listen. The various transport unions must conduct thorough checks on drivers before they allow them to drive long journey buses.
