The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has received an endorsement to become the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to contest the 2024 general election. Deputy General Secretary for the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahene made a declaration of his support for Dr Bawumia in a live interview on Okay FM, to break the defy the orders of the party against such publicity.
The astute politician argued that he is not perturbed about the consequences of his pronouncement, and thus added that his preference does not amount to any imposition on the party to choose Dr Bawumia. He however contended that none of his preferred candidates have ever lost the party’s internal election as far back as 1993.
He noted that Dr Bawumia stands to be a formidable candidate to secure the NPP’s reign in government when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s tenure comes to an end in 2024. Nana Obiri Boahen intimated that his choice of Dr Bawumia does not mean the other candidates are not suitable to lead the party.
“Just like the Ballon d’or, only one candidate wins. It doesn’t mean the others are not competent,” he justified.
Nana Obiri Boahene noted that he breaking out of the status quo is not anything new, adding that it was with his outspoken attitude and vigor that brought President Akufo Addo to lime light. He added that same was given to former President John Agyekum Kuffour when the NPP were about electing their flagbearer.
“If it is a matter of prophetic, then I could be the Political Prophet of the NPP. I have served this party for long to understand the dynamics. I want to make history with this declaration,” he emphasized.
Nana Obiri Boahene continued that the contest for the flagbearer-ship in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will become historic, given the caliber of persons that have surfaced. He however reiterated that Dr Bawumia will undoubtedly emerge the victor who shall lead the NPP in breaking the traditional 8-year political cycle in Ghana’s election.
